Tepid Job Gains, Stubbornly High Turnover Trends

Employment Trends in Accommodation and Food Services

After adding 79,100 new jobs in July, Accommodation and Food Services added a weaker 22,500 jobs in August. This positive growth continues towards the path of a full recovery from the COVID-19 recession. Hotels and restaurants have been hit particularly hard by the post-recession labor shortage, and this sector is one of the few to have not completely recovered jobs – with total employment down about 7% from its pre-pandemic level.

Accommodation and Food Services is made up of “Accommodations” and “Food Service and Drinking Places.” In August, both categories gained jobs: Accommodation gained 4,300 and Food Services 18,200. This level of growth is tepid for Food Services and Drinking Places; this month the category experienced their smallest gains of 2022.
